Time extensions

When a judge call earns a time extension. Written for rules effective 2026-10-16.

Judge calls

At any point in a match, a player may pause to flag a floor judge.

TR 412.1

Judge calls

A time extension should be granted if the total time of the judge call is more than 1 minute. Exactly 1 minute is not more than 1 minute.

TR 412.2

Judge calls

The same threshold is written in the Warning definition: more than 1 minute to rule and correct.

TR 701.2.a.1

Judge calls

412.2 says when an extension should be granted. It does not say how long it should be.

TR 412.2

Other extensions

A deck check within a match gets an extension long enough to cover the logistics of the check.

TR 411.3.b

Other extensions

Late to Match: arriving within 2 minutes of the round start is a Warning and a time extension. Within 10 minutes it is also a Warning and a time extension, upgraded to a Game Loss at high OPL.

TR 703.8.a · TR 703.8.b

Other extensions

Before the round clock starts, or between games, a player may ask a judge for up to a 10 minute extension instead of a penalty. It is the judge's call. The example given is a restroom break.
